To further efforts to promote literacy among Richland County students, the Rotary Club of Shelby distributed over 200 dictionaries to second grade students in the Shelby and Plymouth/Shiloh School Districts, including Shelby St. Mary’s and Shelby Sacred Heart.
Shelby Rotary Club members Lynn Friebel (president), Joe Gies, and Rich Greene (treasurer and secretary), and Shelby Mayor Marilyn John met at the Shelby City Council Chambers building on Monday morning to sort, count, and pack the dictionaries.
Gies stated that the Shelby Rotary Club aims at helping local students with their education and so this project serves a nice fit for their mission.
“The kids really are excited whenever they receive their dictionaries,” said Greene. Mayor John added, “The students may not always have access to internet during class time and so it’s nice for them to have physical books that they can use—plus they get to keep the dictionaries themselves.”
Shelby Rotary Club has partnered with the Mansfield Rotary Club in this effort to supply dictionaries to students for the past four years.
Mayor John noted that this is one of many projects in which the Shelby Rotary Club participates and further commented, “We’re all about giving back to the community.”
