MANSFIELD, Ohio — Granter’s Grinders’ bagels are available once again.
Granter’s Kitchen Manager Kim White and Lead Baker Megan Dininger started moving in to Wayne’s Country Market, on Lexington Avenue, several weeks ago, said White. Their first full batch of bagels were put up for sale on Friday, Oct. 9.
“Hopefully we’ll have more in the future but we thought we’d bring back the most popular for now,” said White. Bagels available for purchase are the asiago cheese, tomato basil, plain, jalapeño, cinnamon crunch and the everything bagel.
They will also sell their signature cream cheeses and broccoli and pasta salads.
The locally owned sandwich and coffee shop closed their doors on Lexington Avenue in December 2014 after 47 years of service. But the owners, bakers and Wayne’s Country Market owners have been preparing for a partnership since then.
“The hope is to bake everyday as we did at Granter’s, to build up the clientele,” White said.
According to White, Wayne and Gayle Meadows, owners of Wayne’s Country Market, bought the rights to all of Granter’s recipes and equipment after Granter’s closed.
Wayne’s Country Market subsequently hired White and Dininger to produce the bagels, cream cheeses and salads.
“The intent is to continue the Granter’s signature name instead of closing up and everybody just forgetting about it,” said White. “I was asked so many times to make them (the bagels) but I couldn’t because I didn’t have a machine to make them with.”
Wayne’s Country Market allotted White and Dininger a portion of the grocery’s deli for the equipment needed for producing the Granter’s bagel.
Wayne’s Country Market Owner Wayne Meadows has done this sort of thing before. In addition to Granter’s Grinders bagels, the store sells pastries from Buckeye Bakers and Schneider’s Too.
“We’re local, we like local. We try to do little things like that, keeping small businesses in Mansfield strong,” said Meadows. “They have a good bagel and we just like doing things like that. We want to keep the name and what they had going still out there for our customers.”
Dininger, who was the Granter’s Grinders lead baker for five years prior to its closing, is excited to be back in the kitchen.
“These are my babies (the bagels). I came in here and got in my groove, we’re back again,” said Dininger.
“We’re local, we like local. We try to do little things like that, keeping small businesses in Mansfield strong,” said Wayne Meadows. “They have a good bagel and we just like doing things like that.”
