MOUNT VERNON — Senior Andre Hill scored seven of his game-high 26 points in overtime to help Shelby bounce back from its first loss of the season and knock off Granville 64-56 in overtime Thursday as part of the MVNUnited Invitational at Ariel Arena in Mount Vernon.
The Whippets (7-1) lost for the first time Tuesday night, 59-48 at River Valley, but shook off that disappointment early in this one, jumping to an 18-8 first-quarter lead.
Yet the Blue Aces (3-2) battled back with a stern defensive effort, and drew to within 34-33 heading to the fourth quarter. The two squads see-sawed the lead before heading to overtime.
Hill’s trey got coach Greg Galloway’s team off on the right foot in the extra session and Shelby cruised home from there.
Sophomore Alex Bruskotter hit two key 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to help forge overtime, and finished with 23 points. The Whippets nailed 17-of-18 free throws, and needed that kind of effort to earn the victory.
Dante Varrasso scored 21 points to pace Granville, while teammate Rex Rader added 15.
Shelby returns to action on Wednesday at Willard.
