“We usually have a really great turnout, the kids have a lot of fun and just about every local business donates something, cash, candy or treats of some kind,” said Michelle Carroll, president of the Butler Parents Club.
On Saturday, ghosts, ghouls, cowboys, princesses, witches and storybook characters gathered in the gym at the Butler Elementary School located at 125 College Street in hopes of taking the prize in their category.
The costume contest started at 3 p.m and was open to children 13 years old and under. Cash prizes were donated by local businesses. First place from each category won $20, second place $15, and third place received $10. The best overall prize went to George Evans for his unique costume he and his family made. Evans portrayed himself as a deer over the mantle which won him the grand prize of $25.
The Whiffletree restaurant donated 10 pizzas for the party, Stoodt’s Grocery in Bellville donated hot dogs, and Ducky’s Bar in Butler donated the buns. Butler Mayor Kevin Carr donated treat bags for the all the children who entered the costume contest. The Lions Club donated pop and Jones Potato Chips donated four cases of chips.
There was a 50/50 raffle with half of the proceeds going to Shari Hoeflich who had been diagnosed with breast cancer.
After the party the contestants marched in the Halloween Parade and then enjoyed trick-or-treat throughout the town from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
