MANSFIELD, Ohio — The Boy Scouts of America Heart of Ohio Council is offering five three-day summer camp sessions starting June 22 for area Cub Scouts. Mansfield’s camp will begin June 22, with four other sessions throughout North Central Ohio in July.

The Cub Scouts, from 7 to 11, have the opportunity to experience archery, shoot BB guns, work with arts and crafts, learn about nature and to play field sports.

Around 300 Cub Scouts joined last year’s day camps throughout North Central Ohio. For many, according to District Director Breck Dokken, it was their first time experiencing some of the activities.

“Our thing is that we like to have fun with a purpose, it’s value related,” said Dokken. “How many kids today can swim a mile, or know how to camp? These activities (as a Boy Scout) are preparing them for life,” he said.

Dokken said he is a firsthand example of how being in The Boy Scouts of America has stuck with him through life. He said his hobbies as an adult came from his experiences as a Scout.

“You learn so many things. We have many programs that these kids can choose from to learn about,” said Dokken as he sorted through pamphlets of information ranging from fishing to journalism. Boy Scouts have the opportunity to learn the basics of these areas, he said.

The camp in Mansfield, located at 3708 Snodgrass Road, starts Monday, June 22 and ends Wednesday, June 24. Each day camp will be led by a day camp director and program director — the rest of the leadership will come from volunteers.

One area the Boy Scouts of America organization struggles with, he said, is getting volunteers.

“Without parents who volunteer, we won’t have anything,” said Dokken. Each day camp this summer requires approximately nine volunteers.

Volunteers are still able to sign up for each day camp by filling out an application. Registration for day camp is also still open, an application fee of $95 applies. There will be no “at the door registration.”
