Hugh “Elmer” Berger, 93 of Mansfield passed away June 6, 2015 at MedCentral Hospital.
Elmer was born December 15, 1921 in Massillon to Joseph and Mary Egloff Berger. He served in the United States Army during World War II and later retired from Sears and Roebuck as a Service Manager in 1980. Elmer was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church where he was a Eucharistic Minister and a member of the choir, American Legion McVey Post, Knights of Columbus 3rd Degree, AARP, and Catholic Gold Age.
Elmer was known to be a very gentle, caring soul that never knew a stranger.
Survivors include his brother Lawrence “Larry” (Alta) Berger of Mansfield; sisters Loretta Parr of Mansfield, Mary Kramer of Sylvania, Helen (Tom) Stanton of Mansfield; sister-in-law Frances Sneeringer; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years Jane Sneeringer Berger; brothers Joseph Jr., Eugene, August, Albert, Ralph.
Friends may call at Herlihy-Chambers Funeral Home, 173 Park Avenue West, on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church with Rev. Gregory Hite officiating. Burial will follow at Mansfield Catholic Cemetery with military honors provided by Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Msgr. Edward C. Dunn Foundation.
