ONTARIO – The owners of a new Subway restaurant think being involved in the community is crucial.

Acting on this, Rajesh and Poojah Shendge planned a giant grand opening event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26 at the Subway, 3880 W 4th St., in conjunction with the connected Valero Gas Station.

Throughout the day, customers could get buy-one-get-one-free six-inch subs at Subway and save 10 cents on each gallon of gas at Valero.

But the Shendges didn’t stop there. They also brought in a bouncy house, games and a balloon animal artist for the day.

At 10:30 a.m., members of the Richland Area Chamber of Commerce and local representatives like Ontario’s Mayor Randy Hutchinson and Springfield Township Trustee Brad Orewiler participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony outside the new restaurant.

The Subway opened on March 22, 2017, after a Quiznos left the space vacant. The Shendges, who know the owner of the Valero, Sam Patel, were excited to move into the spot.

Rajesh and Poojah came to the area from India more than 20 years ago. In addition to their new Subway restaurant, Rajesh founded and serves as president for SAP Hotels, which has a presence in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida.

In an effort to stay involved with the community, this Subway location will be partnering with the Ontario athletics department to provide healthy food options to athletes.

“They are very community-oriented owners,” said Cat Bash, a business consultant for S&T developments. “They are already doing a good job of being involved in the community.”
