MANSFIELD, Ohio — Bill Katsaounis has been attending Sts Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Mansfield since he and parents moved from Greece in 1968. During their annual Greek Festival in Mansfield, he said it’s important to remember your roots.
“You have to know where you came from, where your roots are. Everyone has someplace they call home and it’s fun to remember where that is,” said Katsaounis.
Although Katsaounis’ roots are planted in Mansfield, they run deep. His son, Anthony, dances in the dancing group for the church — so did his daughter.
Constance “Connie” Nearhood agrees in the importance of remembering one’s roots.
“I’ve been doing this (volunteering) for well over 34 years. It’s absolutely important to try to maintain our heritage, our roots. The Greek Festival tries to continue that,” said Nearhood.
“If someone comes here and has their questions answered, we consider that a success. If they come here to try a gyro and they love it, that’s a success,” she added.
The Greek Festival continues through Saturday until 10 p.m. and starts again on Sunday at 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. All are welcome and encouraged to participate in the sharing of Greek culture and food.
