MANSFIELD, Ohio – Thirty-three middle school teams competed in the Middle School Academic Challenge sponsored by and held at the Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center on March 25.

Participating schools included Ashland, Colonel Crawford, Crestview, Discovery School, Lexington, Madison, Mansfield, Mt. Gilead, Northwestern, Plymouth-Shiloh, Sacred Heart (Shelby), St. Mary (Mansfield), St. Peter’s, and Wooster.

Wooster’s Team A won first place with team members were Sophia VanSickle, Josh Lantis, Tyler Keating, Matthew Schaeffer, and Olivia VanSickle.

1. 2nd place went to St. Peter’s team A with 133 points. Team members were Bryce Dix, Brianna Lindsay, Kevin Maxwell and Olivia Togliatti.

2. 3rd place went to Northwestern team A with 131 points. Team members were Katlyn Secrist, Olivia Wakefield, Cody Morrow and Nik King.

Eighty-nine teams from elementary and middle schools in Ashland, Crawford, Morrow, Richland and Wayne counties recently participated in the Winter Academic Challenge

As part of the evening’s competition, teams of students competed by answering 10 team questions followed by 15 lightening round questions using buzzers. They then rotated to compete with other teams.

Parents, grandparents and siblings, as well as teachers and school administrators, cheered on the teams as they progressed through seven rounds of competition and answered questions ranging from history and current events to math and language arts.

The teams will have a final competition on Tuesday, May 19, with middle school students competing during the school day and elementary teams starting at 5:30 p.m. All the events are held at Mid Ohio ESC.

Districts who have participated in any level of competition thus far this year include: Ashland, Bucyrus, Colonel Crawford, Crestline, Crestview, Discovery, Galion, Lexington, Madison, Mansfield City, Mansfield Christian, Mount Gilead, Northwestern, Plymouth-Shiloh, Sacred heart (Shelby), Saint Mary of Mansfield, Saint Peter, Shelby City and Wooster City.
