The owner of a $1 million “Mega Millions” ticket has been identified, solving the mystery of who is the area’s next millionaire.

Danial Brown of Ashland, Ohio has officially claimed his winnings at the Ohio Lottery’s Columbus office. According to Ohio Lottery Public Information Officer Marie Kilbane, Brown filed his claimant form on Tuesday.

“Now all he has to do is wait for a check,” said Kilbane.

Brown will receive a $710,000 check in the mail sometime in the next three or four weeks. Kilbane said 25 percent of Brown’s $1 million winnings were taken for federal taxes and 4 percent for state taxes.

“We wish him congratulations, it’s a nice win,” said Kilbane.

Also receiving a prize for the winning ticket is the East Side Carry Out on 1217 Harding Way East in Galion, where Brown purchased his winning “Mega Millions” lottery ticket. The East Side Carry Out will receive a $1,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

“We’ve gotten a lot of interest around Galion as to the win,” said Kilbane. “In general when we look at trends of retailers that have sold high price tickets they usually see an uptick in their sales.”

Kilbane said the East Side Carry Out has been selling lottery tickets since 1996. According to owner Greg Rumple, the most an individual has won from the store in the past has been $100,000.

“We like to see it as a nice win overall, and it’s exciting,” said Kilbane. “It’s exciting for a community when you have a nice win like that.”

As for Brown, he has no plans for his winnings at the moment, still trying to soak it all in.

“It hasn’t even hit me yet,” he said.
