MANSFIELD — Mansfield City Council is expected Tuesday to discuss upgrades in pay ranges for about 50 non-union jobs within city government.

It’s an annual consideration, according to Sharon May, human resources director for the city.

The upgrade increases the pay at the low end of the scale or the high end of the scale. In many instances, it increases both. No specific pay increases are tied to the legislation.

For example, the current pay scale for the city’s fire chief and police chief is between $65,000 and $100,500, annually. The ordinance would increase the top of the scale to $103,000 for both positions.

The ranges are for the position, not the employee currently holding the job.

“When an individual is hired by the city, their pay falls within that range,” May said. “After that, it’s up to their (supervisor) to determine increases within that range.”

Pending legislation 020122

The legislation to increase the pay ranges is scheduled to be discussed during an employee relations committee meeting at 6:45 p.m. A vote on the ordinance, which would be retroactive to Dec. 25, is planned on Feb. 15.

— discuss during caucus accepting a grant of $58,000 from the Federal Aviation Administration to be used “to combat the spread of coronavirus at the Mansfield Lahm Airport.” No city match is required.

— discuss during caucus the acceptance of a $22,000 grant from the Ohio Office of Criminal Justice Services through its Project Safe Neighborhood Program. Funds will be used to install — and activate for one year — eight automated license plate readers. Future costs, about $20,000 annually, would have to come from the city’s safety-services fund without additional grant money.
