An explosion at Major Metals Company located at 844 Kochheiser Road in Mansfield sent two personnel members to the hospital with unknown injuries.

According to Andy Romoser, Assistant Chief at Washington Township Fire Department, the explosion occurred inside the ventilation system at the factory.

“We’re unsure of what caused the explosion,” said Romoser. “It looks like some damage to the exterior wall ventilation system.”

Romoser said the fire department received the call at approximately 1 p.m. and heavy smoke was visible upon arrival. Romoser was unsure of the specific injuries workers sustained.

Members of the Washington Township Fire Department worked to clear the smoke out of the building and to make sure there were no other fires inside the building. Personnel from American Electric Power (AEP) and the Richland County Sheriff’s Office also responded.

According to their website, Major Metals Company specializes in manufacturing carbon steel tubing and conveyor roll tubing on high frequency tube mills. The company has been distributing steel products in the Midwest for more than 35 years.
