MADISON — Madison Local Schools will be closed Friday for district-wide cleaning after what Supt. Rob Peterson termed an increase in general illness.
There will be no remote learning or virtual instruction for traditional, in-person or online students.
“Due to a recent uptick in general illness to students and staff, all district buildings will be closed to activity at the end of the school day today (Oct. 29) through Sunday to allow for the deep cleaning of our buildings,” Peterson wrote on the district’s website.
Peterson said numerous teachers were out sick Thursday and various positions could not be filled due to a lack of substitute teachers. There were eight teacher vacancies at the high school, five at Madison South Elementary and three at the Middle School.
These numbers do not necessarily indicate COVID-19 cases, since anyone with symptoms that could be from COVID-19 is required to stay home.
“Because in Richland County our risk level is level 3 red, we have to treat symptoms as if they are COVID-19 symptoms and the symptoms for COVID-19 are very similar to a lot of common illnesses,” Peterson said.
The district has reported a total of four COVID-19 cases this week.
