GALION — Owen Hatfield made certain Ontario — which has trailed by at least two TDs early in its first four games — didn’t stumble to a slow start against Galion on Friday night.
The senior defensive back picked off a Wilson Frankhouse pass at the goal line to stop a promising opening drive for the Tigers. Later in the first half, he picked off another pass and took it 81 yards for a TD as Ontario rolled to a 28-0 win.
It’s the third straight win for the Warriors after an 0-2 start and marked the first time Ontario has beaten the Tigers in football in nine tries. It also improved the Warriors to 3-1 in the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference.
Galion, which has now lost two straight after a 2-1 start to the six-week regular season, slipped to 2-3 overall and 2-3 in the MOAC.
Ontario coach Chris Miller praised the work of the 5-7, 150-pound Hatfield and his entire defense, which has now posted six straight shutout quarters.
“(Hatfield) made a great play on a ball in the open field and when he gets the ball … he is fast,” Miller said.
“We struggled a little bit (offensively) at times. It wasn’t anything scheme-wise, it was just penalties and things. We just kind of couldn’t settle in there, but the kids made plays,” Miller said.
“It was a great team win .. for the defense to shut them out, grab a couple of turnovers,” he said.
STRONG QUARTER: After a scoreless opening period, Ontario blocked a Galion quick-kick and took over at the Tigers’ 46-yard line. That set up a drive that ended with a 1-yard TD run by senior running back Jaylon Scott with 8:35 left in the second quarter.
Scott finished with 105 yards on 25 carries.
Trailing 7-0, Galion took over at its own 20-yard line with 1:48 left before the half. The Tigers again moved the ball down the field, but were thwarted when Hatfield snagged his second pick and scored with 26 seconds left on the clock.
Ontario staged its best drive of the night in the third quarter, moving 90 yards to score on nine plays, one of them a 38-yard pass from senior QB Ethan Snyder to senior wide receiver Griffin Shaver. Scott capped the drive with his second 1-yard TD run with 5:27 left on the clock.
Snyder completed seven of 14 passes on the night, good for 78 yards.
The Warriors’ final score came after Ontario recovered a Galion fumble at the Tigers’ 22-yard line late in the third quarter. Snyder ran it in from six yards out with 11:25 left to play in the game, capping the scoring.
Miller agreed his team was opportunistic, taking advantage of two interceptions, two fumble recoveries and the blocked kick.
“That’s something that we have struggled with in previous years,” Miller said. “When we had opportunities tonight, we capitalized on them.”
GOOD START: Galion coach Matt Dick said the turnover on the opening drive gave Ontario momentum his team could not get back.
“I loved our opening drive. I love what we do. I really liked how our young offensive line drove down and was being violent, doing some good things. We had a good run-pass mix … it looked awesome.
“We just made one bad pass over the middle. And boom, there is momentum. From there on, we were a different team and they were a different team,” Dick said.
“You gotta give them credit. Ontario is on the rise. They have lots of nice athletes at skill positions. The quarterback does a good job. They are doing some good stuff.
“If you saw that opening drive, we can be the more physical team. But by the end of the game, you have to their offensive and defensive lines credit because they started to take it to us a little bit,” Dick said.
Frankhouse had most of the Galion offense, running for 72 yards on 24 attempts and completing nine of 17 passes for 137 yards.
UP NEXT: Ontario travels to Marion Pleasant (1-4) next Friday. The Spartans dropped a 35-14 decision to Clear Fork in week five, giving the Colts their first win of the season. Galion hosts Lucas (4-1), a Division VII powerhouse that lost its first game of the year Friday night, 37-7, to unbeaten Division IV Shelby.
