I’ve written poems for girls in the past
They weren’t really good.
I tried rhyming and iambic pentameter
Big words and witty metaphors.
I tried hard to impress rather than reflect the truth.
I guess I just wasn’t ready.
It’s funny what love does to people
I always laughed at them.
A disregard for the rest of the world
Never ending conversations past midnight
Holding hands everywhere they go
I tried hard to ignore
Something I really longed for.
This is my simple song
For a thing so complex
Please excuse my simpleness
But you leave me speechless
So I’ll tell the truth…
I can’t say enough
That I’m in love with you.
A three stranded cord we are braided in love
No one thing or one person can shake us apart
Late nights and diseases, poopy diapers and sneezes –
Laundry, and dishes and burnt food and gardening
School and car loans that just keep us in debt –
Is all one big adventure that we’ll never regret.
No thing or trial will tame us.
Just keep looking at me with those pearly eyes,
Smile… and remember…
That I can’t say enough
That I’m in love with you and
This is my promise
I belong to you
And I’ll always love you.
