Let’s face it. As a child, it’s easy to say that your Dad is your hero: someone to look up to, admire, be proud of… and maybe fear slightly. I never liked to make my Dad angry. He had a way of “thumping” you on the head that always made you stand up straight and pay attention.
My dad, he may not be here with me physically anymore, but he remains in my memories forever. From first cars and changing tires in the backyard before getting the keys to walking down the aisle on his arm and being picked up and swung around for the father /daughter dance at my wedding reception, I always remember him fondly.
My most memorable moment with my father was when I was very young. It was Thanksgiving at my aunt’s house. There was always an endless table of food and desserts brought by different family members which meant multiple choices of meats, veggies…and desserts.
Cookies, cakes and pies all in a line, and brownies still warm from the oven…YUM! That year I decided to be adventurous and try something new. My Mom had always loved Pecan Pie so I figured I would give it a try. Let me tell you that I absolutely fell in love with the filling for this pie. It was magnificent! The pecans… Not so much of a nut fan. I proceeded to eat my pie carefully manipulating each pecan with my tongue to ensure that I had been able to thoroughly remove all of the wonderful pie filling. In the end I ended up with a plate of completely clean pecans, which I then gave to my Dad because it wasn’t good to waste food.
Dad, who was in deep conversation with uncles and other family members, was grateful for the snack that his youngest daughter had brought him so thoughtfully, didn’t stop to wonder where the pecans came from. It wasn’t until much later that he learned that I had already thoroughly enjoyed those pecans…but enjoyed the rest of the pie more.
Needless to say there was a thump involved…and some laughter!
