The Miller family—Alan, Deanna, Abby, Bryce, Grace, and Bodpegn—hopes to kick start their fundraising campaign for their nonprofit organization called, “The Journey of a Child,” by organizing the first annual “Disco Glo-Run” 5K.
The proceeds of the 5K will benefit The Journey of a Child, which was created in 2013 to help build and fund a Christian school in Gambela, Ethiopia.
Inspired by their child’s (Bodpegn) journey from Gambela, Ethiopia to the United States, the Millers would like to positively impact other children’s lives through The Journey of a Child.
Alan Miller said that he and his son, Bryce, had the opportunity to visit Gambela last December and witnessed the underprivileged living conditions for those residing in that region. Miller said that he felt touched to provide assistance in any way possible and later learned that many of the children are deprived of earning an education, inspiring the idea to build a school.
“It’s going to take awhile,” said Miller. “But once the school is built, we hope to have a sponsorship program where someone can sponsor a child and pay for their books.”
The Millers are partnering with the Ethiopian Kale Heywet Church (EKHC) to help in this endeavor.
Miller said their goal is to raise $250,000 to build and fund the school, which will help thousands of children obtain an education.
To begin their fundraising campaign, the Millers are holding the Disco Glo-Run 5K. The event will be held Saturday, June 28 at the Ontario High School, located at 467 Shelby-Ontario Road. Registration begins at 8 p.m. and the race starts at 9 p.m.
Those interested in running may pre-register at www.ohioraceday.com for $20, or $65 for the family rate (includes four t-shirts; each additional shirt is $15). To be guaranteed a t-shirt, runners must pre-register by June 16. Race day registration costs $25. The family rate on race day is $75.
Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers. There will also be door prizes and disco music.
Participants are encouraged to dress in their best disco outfit.
Sponsors for the event include H.I.G. Capital, Jack Maxton Chevrolet, CSC, MyPro Apparel, Mike Voinovich and No Limits Studio & Spa.
