Mayor Marilyn John described the July 1 afternoon visit with Congressman Bob Gibbs to Shelby’s city council that evening. Also during the meeting Project Coordinator Joseph Gies, gave an update on the construction of the Justice Center. And Community and Economic Development Coordinator Christina Thompson updated council on upcoming events taking place in Shelby.

Mayor John provided information to council about Gibb’s visit to Shelby on Monday and stated, “Shelby shows very well.”

While Gibbs was visiting Shelby, he made a stop at the Kehoe Center and then continued on to visit MTD in Shelby. John said, “MTD is not only impressive on the outside, but the inside, too.” Mayor John also described to Gibbs the flood issues and the work that the city has done with Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD).

Project Coordinator, Joseph Gies, gave council an update on the construction of the Justice Center and said, “The Justice Center is carrying on very well and August 2 is still the date that they are aiming towards.” August 2 is the date that the roof should be completed on the Justice Center. Councilmen Garland John Gates expressed interest in receiving a tour of the Justice Center and Mayor John encouraged members to go view the project that is in progress.

Community and Economic Development Coordinator Christina Thompson talked about the upcoming Bicycle Days which will be taking place July 5-7. Along with Bicycle Days, Farm to Plate will be coming to the Farmer’s Market on July 20 at 10:30 am.

Thompson said, “Ed Pickens will be the first chef at the event and Malabar Restaurant has joined on as well.” Thompson stated, “The first Farmer’s Market went really well. There were a couple hundred people in attendance and there were 32 vendors. That was the largest Farmer’s Market we have ever had.”

Council addressed Ordinance 26, which was related to a school resource officer being placed at Pioneer Career and Technology Center in Shelby. The topic will be discussed in further detail at future meetings.
