LEXINGTON — The Lexington girls 4×800 meter relay team punched its ticket to the state meet — and shattered its own week-old school record — Thursday afternoon at Lexington High School.
The foursome of freshman Mackenna Curtis-Collins, senior Lillian Freundlich, sophomore Abby Miller and sophomore Dominique Clairmonte finished first in 9:40.50 to earn a state berth on the opening day of competition in the Division II regional meet.
The event concludes Saturday. The top four finishers in each event qualify for next week’s state meet at Ohio State’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Curtis-Collins, Freundlich, Miller and Clairmonte broke the school record they set at last week’s district meet at Oak Harbor. They shaved another four seconds off their district championship time of 9:44.8.
Clear Fork’s Erick Jackson and Wyatt Tilton and Galion’s Alex Armistad also earned state berths Thursday.
Jackson finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 152-feet, 6-inches. Genoa Area’s Logan Bryer won with a toss of 172-9.
Tilton was fourth in the pole vault at 14-3. The regional crown went to River Valley’s Craig Martin, who cleared 15-0.
Armistad earned a return trip to Columbus in the long jump with a leap of 21-00.75. Armistad and Columbus East’s Isiah Carter tied for fourth, but the final state-qualifying spot went to Armistad based on his next longest jump (21-00.50). Carter’s second best jump was 20-11.25. Milan Edison’s Brandon Cushler won the event with a leap of 21-10.
