MANSFIELD — St. Peter’s elementary school teacher Sarah Rizzo is among those elementary and high school teachers in the Diocese of Toledo recently selected to receive the 2019 Golden Apple Award.

The award honors outstanding individuals who devote their lives to Catholic education.

Rizzo is a graduate of St. Peter’s High School, and was the Homecoming Queen as a senior. She has been teaching for 22 years, the past 11 at St. Peter’s Elementary School as a sixth grade language arts teacher. Previously, she taught for four years in the Diocese of Columbus and seven years in Southwestern City Schools.

On May 9, the Golden Apple Awards Banquet will take place at the Hilton Garden Inn, Perrysburg.

Throughout the Diocese, nomination forms were made available in January on the Diocese of Toledo website, the DOTschools website, Nuntius, the Teacher Bulletin and posted in the Principal Newsletter. Nomination forms were due by February 1 to the school principal to verify eligibility and then forwarded to the Diocese of Toledo.

A link to the Google Classroom was then emailed to the nominees to complete the application process, due by March 8, 2019, at which point the judging began.

The following was included in the application process: Nomination form with the nomination letter; Pastor or President’s letter of support; Principal’s letter of support; Essay; Community Service, Professionalism and Leadership Form Added to application by the Catholic Schools Office: Copy of Ohio license or certification; Copy of Catechetical Certificate (if a religion teacher); CEUs from last 5 years.
