High school students from three Richland County schools held their 2014 proms on Saturday evening. Lucas, Ontario, and Plymouth-Shiloh high schools were fortunate to enjoy clear skies and mild temperatures for the evening’s events. Journeys, Neverland and masquerade themes created the ambiance for the proms.

Lucas High School couples appeared to be a little chilly as they waited to make their grand entrance to their 2014 prom, which was held at Deer Ridge Golf Club in Bellville, but the atmosphere warmed up quickly once things got underway. The theme was Neverland, from the well-known 1953 Walt Disney film, “Peter Pan.”

The theme’s colors were green and gold, with hand painted signs showing the couple just which way to turn to get to Neverland. Couples enjoyed a buffet dinner catered by the Deer Ridge staff prior to dancing the night away.

When asked what he thought about the Neverland theme, senior Kyle Shindelldecker said, “I was skeptical at first, it seemed a little weird. But I like it, it’s cool.” His date agreed, “Yeah, it’s something different. I like it,” added Maggie Lorentz.

Ontario High School students attended their prom at the high school in Ontario. The prom’s theme was Journey to Remember and decorations include an old world map. The grand march was held in the school gymnasium, with one side of the bleachers packed with family and friends. The prominent colors of the prom decoration were purple and gold.

Couples entered the gym through a glittery purple gate, where they were followed by a spotlight as they made their way down a red carpet to where they were photographed. Longer hemlines were prominent in the girls’ dresses, but no one color dominated over another. The young men appeared to prefer the classic black tuxedo, many choosing thinner notch or peak lapels.

The Ontario after-prom was held at Park Lanes Bowling alley.

Plymouth-Shiloh High School students enjoyed their prom at the Masonic Temple on Middle Bellville Road in Mansfield. Couples were greeted at the Masonic Temple in Mansfield with a glittery mask, central to the Midnight Masquerade theme.

Many of the Plymouth-Shiloh couples tried them on immediately, while others had come prepared with masks that coordinated with their formalwear.

Andie Daron, a member of the prom court, swapped dresses with her cousin and had her hair done in Shelby at Details Hair Salon in Shelby. “I have been going there for years and they have always done the best job,” stated Daron.

Beaded bodices were very popular for the girls and the dress colors were fresh and spring-like. Lime, lavender, yellow and light blue were prominent on the ladies. The young men of Plymouth were adventurous in their formalwear. A good portion chose traditional neckties over the standard bow tie and went with alternate colors such as gray or white for their tuxes, often with vests matching their date’s dress.
