MANSFIELD — Shelby’s high school band teacher, Oyun Hyun, faces a maximum of 11 years in prison if convicted on all charges stemming from a rape accusation, according to the Richland County Prosecutor’s Office.

Hyun would also have to register as a sex offender every 90 days for the rest of his life, if convicted.

Hyun was recently indicted on rape, sexual battery, gross sexual imposition and sexual imposition charges in connection with an incident at his home on Nov. 21.

“It occurred in Ontario,” Olivia Boyer, an assistant county prosecutor in the criminal division said. “The victim was at the defendant’s residence. She made a report to the Ontario Police Department.”

According to the Shelby Superintendent Tim Tarvin, Hyun is still on paid leave.

Assistant Prosecutor, Jodie Schumacher said the incident was “not a stranger rape.”

In other cases, Kraige Black was indicted on three counts of felonious assault, involuntary manslaughter, and improperly handling a firearm in a motor vehicle. He is facing a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison if convicted on all counts.

On Nov. 27, law enforcement alleges that Black shot two people, including a 28-year-old mother. The shot to the mother may have resulted in a miscarriage, Schumacher said.

“To say that miscarriage is a result of the shooting isn’t the same as saying she was shot in the abdomen. That’s going to be the argument (in court),” Shumacher said. “Obviously it’s a very sensitive issue to the victim. But it’s not the same as you and I being shot dead.”

Others charged in connection with this event were Toya Stephens, who was indicted for obstructing justice, weapons under disability and tampering with evidence and Lyric Porters who was indicted for obstructing justice.

“(Porter’s) felony is enhanced for helping Black,” Boyer said.
