Secretary of State Jon Husted announced that 7,780 new entities filed to do business in Ohio in January 2014. These numbers are down slightly compared to January 2013, in which 8,060 new entities filed with the Secretary of State.
During the previous two years, 2012 and 2013, the state saw record-setting new business filing numbers – 88,068 and 89,735 new companies file to do business in Ohio respectively. Growth in online business filings has been steady. Since the program’s launch in October 2013, 5,424 new companies have filed online.
Though the most visible role of the Secretary of State is that of chief elections officer, the office is also the first stop for individuals or companies who want to file and start a business in Ohio. While recognizing these numbers can’t provide a complete picture of Ohio’s jobs climate, they are an important indicator of economic activity that Secretary Husted hopes will add to the discussion of how to improve the state’s overall climate for business.
