Sidney James Worthy was born in Galveston, TX on January 3, 1948, to Wilma “Sissy” Lee (Schrieber) and Dewitt “Boots” Parker Worthy. He graduated from Texas City High School in 1966 and attended Trinity University on a football scholarship where he graduated with a degree in Homebuilding in 1971. He met Teresa Jean Powell in the summer of 1970 when Terry and a group of student nurses came from Illinois Wesleyan University for summer internships in Houston. They met in the first week and their love survived a 1200-mile, long distance relationship! Sid moved to Illinois the next year and worked for Hoffman-Rosner Construction while Terry finished her senior year and they were married on May 27, 1972, at Geneva Road Baptist Church in Wheaton, Illinois.
That same year, Sid and Terry headed south because “it snowed before Thanksgiving!” He worked for Lexington Homes for a number of years before he joined the family plumbing business in 1975 and worked for his step-dad, Jack Krepser of Krepser Plumbing in Galveston. Several years later, he transitioned from crawling under the houses to supplying other plumbers, and was with Coburns Plumbing Supply for over 30 years. Aside from his paid job, he was also the coach for many baseball and soccer teams, the unofficial fix-it man for the church and many friends and family. He was a proud member of the Lakehouse Gang—where church friends became family. He was the family long-haul chauffeur and faithful audience member for every dance recital, choir concert, and karate tournament of his son, Joshua and daughter, Shawn. Sid was a charter member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Texas City and has been a faithful member of League City United Methodist Church for over 50 years. Among many other jobs, he served as the church youth director and has many lasting relationships from his time in that role. In his retirement, he and Terry headed up the Food Distribution Ministry that brought another blessing of friends. His woodworking skills were heightened and there are many projects bearing his signature today. He continued to follow many grandchild’s sports and musical adventures and enjoyed being on the golf course with longtime friends.
Sid was an “over the hill” athlete who could take it as well as he gave it! He could always embellish a good story and will be remembered for his willingness to help when needed. Sid never met a stranger.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his mother-in-law Caroline Powell; and 2 brothers-in-law, Scott Powell and Jerry Rentfrow. He is survived by his wife, Terry; their children, Shawn Bergen, and Josh (Julie) Worthy; his brother Richard (Marcella) Worthy; his sister-in-law, Anne Rentfrow; his father-in-law Edward Powell; grandchildren, Sarah, William, Scott, Rylie, and Jacob; many nieces, nephews, cousins and a loving church family.
