MANSFIELD — Amidst the familiar calliope music and spinning wooden figures at Richland Carrousel Park, a single stationary chair has appeared, serving a vital purpose for local youth.
The historic downtown attraction at 75 N. Main Street is the latest community destination to join Richland County Children Services’ (RCCS) ongoing “This Seat is Waiting” awareness campaign.
The carrousel joins an expanding network of local businesses and churches across Richland County hosting symbolic empty chairs to represent children waiting for safe, nurturing foster placements.
Attached to the carrousel’s campaign chair is an informational flyer featuring a prominent QR code. By scanning the code with a smartphone, visitors are taken directly to the RCCS fostering resources page, making it simple to research licensing requirements or request information.
“The carrousel is a place built on family and community,” said Joyce Wells, CEO of Richland Carrousel Park. “When we saw other area businesses and churches stepping up to host these chairs, we knew we wanted to join the effort. If hosting this seat helps even one child find a loving, temporary home during a difficult time, it is an absolute success.
“Local foster homes are critical for keeping children within their own school districts and close to familiar surroundings when they cannot safely remain with their biological families. RCCS provides comprehensive training, financial assistance, and support to all licensed foster families,” said Brigitte Coles, Community Engagement Specialist.
“By placing the campaign chair in one of Mansfield’s most popular family landmarks, we hope to inspire residents who have previously considered fostering to finally take the first step.”
