MANSFIELD – On any given afternoon at the Richland Academy of the Arts (RAA) in downtown Mansfield, the dance studios are filled to capacity. Music echoes through the hallways, young performers run through lines, and visual artists refine their technique. But behind the energy of nearly 1,900 local students lies a pressing physical reality: the academy’s historic 75 North Walnut Street facility is bursting at the seams.
At a time when public arts education is declining nationwide, Mansfield is experiencing the exact opposite. During the 2025–2026 season, RAA welcomed 1,864 enrolled students across 3,669 class registrations, hosting more than 12,000 individual sessions.
Demand for creative youth programming in Central Ohio has never been higher, yet aging infrastructure—including antiquated electrical, plumbing, and heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems—threatens to limit future growth.
To keep pace with this surging demand, RAA launched its $3.7 million Empower the Arts capital campaign to renovate and modernize the facility into a dynamic regional hub. Targeted physical improvements—including modernized dance studios and upgraded spaces for music, theatre, visual arts, and martial arts (Kenpo)—will provide students with the professional environments needed to hone their craft, build lifelong confidence, and nurture future thinkers and leaders.
Exceptional ability is built through rigorous practice, expert mentorship, and supportive environments. In his landmark 1985 book, Developing Talent in Young People, educational theorist Dr. Benjamin Bloom observed:
“Creativity follows mastery, so mastery of skills is the first priority for young talent.”
For regional businesses, supporting arts education is a strategic investment in the workforce. Creative disciplines teach adaptability, collaboration, and high-level problem-solving—skills essential to every modern enterprise. In The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything, the late education advocate Sir Ken Robinson highlighted the necessity of this work:
“The fact is that given the challenges we face, education doesn’t need to be reformed — it needs to be transformed. The key to this transformation is not to standardize education, but to personalize it, to build achievement on discovering the individual talents of each child, to put students in an environment where they want to learn and where they can naturally discover their true passions.”
Community momentum is already building: as of August 2026, RAA has raised $2,375,284.29 toward its $3.7 million goal, bringing the facility transformation within reach.
Ensuring arts education remains accessible to all families is central to that expansion. RAA provided $21,167 in tuition assistance last year alone; since the inception of the program in 1991, more than 4,400 people have been awarded scholarships totaling $806,992. All campaign contributions are managed with strict transparency and accountability, directly benefiting our regional community across nine counties: Ashland, Crawford, Franklin, Knox, Huron, Licking, Morrow, Richland, and Wayne.
“These renovations will create a space where artists of all ages can learn, grow, and thrive,” says Dr. Michael Benson, executive director of RAA. “By expanding programming and strengthening our collaborations with partners like Kingwood Center Gardens, Mansfield Playhouse, Mansfield Art Center, and the Renaissance Theatre, we are securing lasting artistic vitality for our region.”
The mission of the Richland Academy of the Arts is “to foster, through artistic expression, the creative potential that exists in everyone to enrich the lives of our neighbors, our community, and the world at large.” By joining the Empower the Arts campaign, visionary leaders can help build an inspiring, creative, and prosperous future for Central Ohio.
