ONTARIO – The Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging, Inc. has announced the success of a heart-warming partnership with the Discovery School through its Intergenerational Pen Pal Program.
Created by Carlee Lightle, Marketing Coordinator at the Area Agency on Aging, the inspiring initiative brought together senior adults at local meal sites and 3rd and 4th grade students for a year of meaningful connection through handwritten letters.
The Intergenerational Pen Pal Program was designed to foster relationships across generations by encouraging participants to share stories, life experiences, hobbies, favorite memories, and friendly questions through monthly letters.
The program helped reduce social isolation among older adults while also supporting students’ literacy, empathy, and communication skills.
Participants committed to writing one letter per month throughout the school year and attended orientation sessions that helped prepare them for the exciting journey of connecting with a new friend through written correspondence.
“At our school, taking action is at the heart of learning,” said Mrs. Shepherd, 3rd grade teacher at Discovery School. “Through connecting with our pen pals, students brought their learning to life, turning our primary sources unit of inquiry into a real-world experience filled with stories, history, and human connection.”
To celebrate the success of the program, the Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging hosted a special end-of-year field trip where students and senior adults were finally able to meet their pen pals in person.
The festive event featured music, lunch, and a fun art project, all designed to create a welcoming and memorable atmosphere for everyone involved.
“Area Agency on Aging did a wonderful job hosting our third and fourth graders,” shared Mrs. Shepherd. “The room was set up with a Scooby-Doo theme in a way that was appealing to the kids, and they were able to feel comfortable while meeting the people behind all of their letters.”
The Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging, Inc. continues to provide leadership, collaboration, coordination, and services to older adults, people with disabilities, caregivers, and community resource networks that support individual choice, independence, and dignity.
