MANSFIELD — A peacock’s high-pitched call at the Kingwood Center Gardens on Sunday afternoon helped to signal the end of winter.
Officially, spring began on Friday. But sunny skies with temperatures approaching 80 on Sunday had folks strolling the grounds of the 47-acre garden estate at 50 N. Trimble Road.
Residents soaked in sunshine and the first real blooms of the season. Tulips and daffodils are beginning to stretch upward, while walking trails and shaded groves offered a long-awaited escape from winter’s grip.
There are still days ahead expected with temps dipping into the 20s. But Sunday’s warm weather and strolling around Kingwood felt like a turning point, despite the fact peak spring bloom is still a month or more away.
Children tossed food (still just a quarter!) to ducks and geese at the pond. Others paused to take photos among early blooms — small but meaningful signs that winter has loosened its hold.
Kingwood Center Gardens is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages seven to 18. Children 6 and under are admitted free.
