She shared a loving and devoted marriage with her husband, David F. Cole. Their story began in Mansfield, Ohio, where David was friends with Margaret Ellen’s brothers. Their friendship blossomed into love following David’s return from service in the U.S. Navy, and the couple married on May 12, 1945, at Brethren Church in Cleveland, Ohio.
Together, Margaret Ellen and David raised two children, Susan and Alan, and built a life centered on family, shared adventures, and lasting friendships. Family remained one of her greatest joys throughout her life.
Margaret Ellen is survived by her children, Susan (the late Roger Heng) and Alan Cole (the late Marla Cole); her grandchildren, Christina (Lee Harshbarger), Sarah (Marty Telschow), Alexandra (Andrew Yoder), and Ian (Kristine) Cole; and her great-grandchildren, Lilith Harshbarger, Clarice Telschow, Maeve Harshbarger, Nash Cole-Yoder, and Isla Cole-Yoder.

A Life of Adventure and Accomplishment
Margaret Ellen and David shared a lifelong love of boating and the Great Lakes. Together, they explored all five Great Lakes, creating treasured memories along the way. Some of their happiest adventures were extended family boating trips to Georgian Bay, Canada, where they enjoyed the beauty of the waterways and the pleasure of time spent together.
An accomplished boater, Margaret Ellen was active in the Mansfield Power Squadron. She was especially proud of earning the prestigious “N” designation, the highest level of educational achievement within the Power Squadron at that time. She distinguished herself as the first woman to earn this recognition in both the Mansfield Power Squadron and District 7.
Margaret Ellen’s talents and interests extended well beyond the water. In 1942, she was named third runner-up in the Miss Ohio Pageant, where she showcased her talent for tap dancing. She crocheted more than 200 afghans, lovingly sharing her creations with charities, friends, and family.
Margaret Ellen shared a special bond with her beloved aunt, Tillie Mae, affectionately known as “Auntie.” The two spent countless cherished hours together, sharing stories, enjoying lively games of Pinochle, and simply appreciating each other’s company. Auntie served as a treasured mentor and source of wisdom throughout Margaret Ellen’s life.
She was also deeply involved in her community. As an active member of the local Child Development Club, she supported efforts to promote children’s safety, health, and development. She participated in the Mansfield Federation of Women, serving as a chaperone for the Mansfield Cotillion and generously providing dresses for some of its participants. Her involvement reflected her belief in supporting young people and contributing to the community she called home.
A Devoted Mother and Homemaker
Margaret Ellen took great pride in creating a warm and welcoming home for her family. A talented cook and baker, she was especially known for her delicious homemade pies, which were among David’s favorites. She was also an accomplished seamstress, lovingly making clothing for her family on her sewing machine.
Above all, she was a devoted and encouraging mother who valued education, nurtured curiosity, and took an active interest in her children’s lives. Her love, guidance, and dedication helped shape the generations that followed.
A Joyful Spirit and a Lasting Legacy
Margaret Ellen’s warmth, kindness, and cheerful personality endeared her to family, friends, and neighbors throughout her life. She maintained her independence well into her later years, living independently until her final year, when she transitioned to assisted living.
At Primrose Retirement Community in Mansfield, she became a beloved member of the community and proudly served as a resident Ambassador. Always ready with a smile, a joke, or a kind word, she had a wonderful ability to brighten the days of those around her.
She embraced opportunities to socialize, laugh, and participate in community activities. She especially enjoyed balloon volleyball, gatherings at The Pub, and musical performances, particularly those by Becky. Visits from children were among her favorite occasions, reflecting the affection she always had for young people and the joy she found in their company.
Even at 102, Margaret Ellen retained the warmth, humor, curiosity, and enthusiasm that defined her life. She had a remarkable gift for making others feel welcome and appreciated, and her cheerful presence left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
