BELLVILLE — For about 30 years, Richland County families visited Possum Run Greenhouse to pick out plants, flowers and seasonal decorations. Today, they’re coming back to celebrate weddings.
The Legacy on Possum Run, a wedding and event venue in the former greenhouse, will host a ribbon cutting at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, to showcase its refreshed interior. Guests will also see a mock-up of a new outdoor ceremony space planned for 2027.
When the greenhouse closed in 2017, owners Chad and Sarah Thompson saw more than an empty building. Drawing on their real estate background and Chad’s experience as an architect, they reimagined the property while preserving many of its original features.
The result is two distinct spaces. The New Roots greenhouse offers a naturally lit ceremony setting, while the Bridgewater reception area features an indoor waterfall and a rainbow bridge, giving guests the feel of an outdoor celebration with the comfort of being inside.
Affordability is central to the venue’s approach. Couples can use more than 2,000 décor pieces, from centerpieces and lanterns to arches and greenery, at no additional charge. They’re also free to choose their own caterers and other wedding professionals, and staff remain on-site during events, setting up and tearing down tables and chairs.
“We wanted The Legacy to be a place where couples could have a truly beautiful experience without feeling that everything comes with an additional charge,” said Whitney Windsor, who partners with the owners to manage the venue’s day-to-day operations.
Windsor, who attended Ontario High School, has spent more than 15 years in the wedding industry and has been part of more than 500 weddings. She and Sarah have known each other since middle school, when they played soccer together, and reconnected years later as the venue took shape.
The Legacy opened in December 2019, months before the COVID-19 pandemic. Windsor described 2021 and 2022 as rebuilding years.
“We’re continuing the tradition of bringing people together, just in a different way,” Windsor said.
The ribbon cutting at 5384 Possum Run Road in Bellville is open to the public; no RSVP is needed. Lemonade, water, coffee and cookies will be served. The venue also hosts regular open houses for prospective couples.
