SHELBY — The road to the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference championship runs through Shelby — until proven otherwise.

Quarterback Michael Shepherd and his veteran offensive line made sure of it on Friday night.

Shepherd rushed for a career-high 211 yards and three touchdowns and threw for a pair of TDs as the Whippets roughed up Ontario 41-7 at the Whippet Athletic Complex.

Shelby (8-0, 5-0) took sole possession of first place in the chase for the MOAC title. Ontario (7-1, 4-1) slipped a game back with two weeks remaining in the regular season.

“We rushed for more than 300 yards (311). That’s kind of unbelievable,” said Shepherd, who averaged 10.6 yards per carry. “All the credit goes to our offensive line and to our coaches.”

Battle of the Trenches

Left tackle Aiden Winters (6-foot-3, 250 pounds), left guard Bryce Booker (6-1, 280), center Emmett Bates (6-1, 300), right guard Gavin Garrett (6-0, 275) and right tackle Austin Winters (6-2, 250) controlled the line of scrimmage for the Whippets. All five are seniors and returning lettermen.

“One of our strengths coming into the season was to have five seniors up front,” Shelby coach Rob Mahaney said. “Having some experience back, we thought that was going to be a strength and it showed tonight.

“Max Miller getting healthy and playing tight end for us, that was huge to help those guys, too.”

Meanwhile, Shelby’s stout defensive front limited Ontario to 18 rushing yards on 21 attempts.

“One of the things that we had to win tonight was the battle up front and we didn’t do it,” Ontario coach Aaron Eckert said. “When you give a good team opportunities like we did, we couldn’t get off the field.”

Shining Stars

A Miami (Ohio) recruit as a tight end, Shepherd completed 7-of-12 passes for 120 yards. He hooked up with Casyn Koch on a 6-yard scoring strike in the first quarter and tossed an 18-yarder to Brady Bowman in the third.

Bowman caught four passes for 77 yards and added a 5-yard rushing touchdown later in the third to trigger the running clock.

Shepherd capped it with his third rushing TD, a 1-yarder in the fourth. He had scoring runs of 2 and 64 yards in the second quarter as the Whippets built a 20-0 halftime lead.

“The offense was running smoothly and we came out and executed well,” Shepherd said. “And for the defense to come out and nearly get a shutout, that takes a lot of stress off me as a quarterback. It lets everything flow smoothly.”

Teachable Moment

Ontario’s lone score came when quarterback Gavin Miller hooked up with Cardae Brown on a 37-yard touchdown early in the fourth perod. Miller completed 10-of-20 passes for 117 yards but was limited to negative-12 yards rushing on eight carries. Max Ciroli rushed for 30 yards on 11 carries, while Brown had three catches for 66 yards.

“I think the biggest thing we’ve got to learn is in big games, good football teams show up and they continue to play,” Eckert said. “I don’t fault our guys’ effort tonight. We played hard. We just got our tails kicked. Everyone saw that.”

Turn the Page

Unofficially, Shelby clinched a top-four seed and a first-round tournament bye with Friday’s win. The Whippets have games against Pleasant (2-6) and Marion Harding (5-3) remaining.

“When we broke the huddle I told the team, ‘It’s not an eight-week season,’ ” Shepherd said. “This was a great win tonight and we’re going to enjoy it, but … on Monday we turn the page.”
