Karen Mendelsohn was born in Cleveland, Ohio on February 18, 1950 to Esther and Alvin Freidman, later adopted by her step father Norman Mendelsohn.
After highschool she attended Kent State University where she graduated with her teaching degree. She continued her education at The Ohio State University where she received her Masters degree.
Her teaching career began in Cleveland and continued with Mansfield City Schools when she moved. Her career in special education spanned more than 30 years! She used every opportunity to mentor, support, teach, and help thousands of students, families, and student teachers.
Karen loved spending time outside. From working in the yard and planting flowers, to swimming in her pool, or sitting by a bonfire. She loved to host family dinners, holiday gatherings, exploring the earth and collecting its beauty.
Although she could certainly be proud of the wealth of friends and chosen family she developed, her children are truly the source of deepest pride.
Karen was always quick to serve the needs of others, and was always compelled to give out of whatever resources she had. She believed in the dignity of others and was passionate about advancing social justice.
Karen met the love of her life, Mark Purviance, in January of 2005. The two have spent the last 21+ years showing what true love looks like.
Karen was preceded in death by Alvin Freidman (father), Norman Mendelsohn (father), Esther Mendelsohn (mother), Richard Mendelsohn (brother), Josh Mendelsohn (nephew).
Karen is survived by her husband Mark Purviance, son Shaun Maurer, daughters Rebecca Maurer (Steve Owens), Anna Pry (Jason Pry), Caitlyn Purviance (Dave Bates), Melissa Stevens (Cody Stevens), Barbara Purviance (Cody Tussing), and Roxanne Purviance. Grandchildren: Riane Sullivan, Gillian Sullivan, Ashton Owens, Tristian Owens, Hayven Pry, Jocelynn Harris, Cullen Tussing, Caeden Tussing, Aria Tussing, Gwendlynn Pry, Lee Sullivan, Delaney Pry, Eion Pry, Lydia Pry, Myrada Pry, Ruelle Stevens, and Rafe Stevens.
She also leaves behind her brothers Tom Mendelsohn (Sherry), Herb Mendelsohn (Lisa); her sister in law Linda Mendelsohn and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.
Karen’s family will hold a service of remembrance where they will greet friends from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm on Wednesday, September 30, 2026 in the Marion Ave Chapel of Snyder Funeral Homes. A brief service will begin at 3:00 pm. The family will gather at her home after.
