SHELBY – Shelby girls’ soccer coach Keith Swisher canceled practice Monday for a reason that had nothing to do with the sport.
That decision allowed seventh-grade soccer player Reagan Rodenbaugh to be honored by the Shelby Board of Education for her perfect Ohio State Test score in Spring of the 2025-26 school year.
“Your academics come before your athletics,” said Shelby Board of Education President Scott Rose.
Rodenbaugh clearly follows that mantra — yet extra-curricular activities have their place, too.
Monday night’s board of education meeting celebrated all things Shelby. Students were honored for their school work, and Shelby’s track teams for their state exploits.

“I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I don’t know how many kids in the state of Ohio were able to accomplish (a perfect score in geometry),” Shelby High School Principal Joe Morabito said.
Shelby’s academic success is reflected in its Ohio School Report Card. The district as a whole achieved four stars. The high school and elementary school earned four, and the middle school got four-and-a-half.
“Congratulations to the staff and students for doing such a great job on those tests and everything that goes into it,” Shelby City School Superintendent Michael Browning said. “It’s not just the test; it’s attendance, it’s graduation. It’s everything that goes into a school year.
“Our goal is to get a little bit better every single day and to see where we can go.”
Also recognized were the members of Shelby’s track teams: Princess Timko, Ashley Montgomery, Charlie Walp and Madison Henkell for the girls, who placed first in the 4×100-meter relay with a 48-second time; and Brady Bowman, Brayden DeVito, Renner Gano and Gavin Baker for the boys, notching 41.30 seconds and finishing second.
“(The boys) set an Ohio High School Athletic Association Division III record, as well as the OHSAA state meet Division III record with their time,” said Shelby Athletic Director Charlie Ridenour. “In my 15-plus years of coaching track, that’s one of the fastest times I’ve seen in the 4×100.”
