Richard Lee McCumber Jr. passed away on Friday, September 18, 2026 after a battle with cancer. He was born on December 11, 1954 in Galion, Ohio to the late Joan and Richard McCumber Sr.
Known to most as “Dick,” he had been a resident of Lexington, Ohio for thirty years after being a longtime resident of Galion.
After graduating from Galion High School in 1973, he accepted a role in drafting. His entrepreneurial spirit soon drove him to start a vending machine business, which he ran throughout central Ohio. During this time, he met Susan (Abston) McCumber at Fisher’s Big Wheel in Shelby, Ohio. The pair married on December 31, 1982 and enjoyed more than forty years of marriage. Dick went on to have a successful career in financial planning, earning his Series 7 and working for a number of years with A.G. Edwards. He ended his professional career at J.P. Morgan Chase. His talent for building and problem solving led him to be an avid woodworker. He had an extensive tool collection and could often be found tinkering in his workshop. Dick was an impressive card player, particularly bridge, where he reached Life Master Status. He was involved in a number of social and community groups throughout the years, including the Friends group at Galion St. Paul, Lexington Lions Club, and Lexington Kiwanis. One of his favorite accomplishments included the Father Daughter Campout, which he organized for several years. The campout included games, activities, crafts, and copious amounts of sugar for a group of dads and young daughters.
Dick leaves behind his loving wife Susan; his children Candace (Mike) Armstrong, Richard McCumber III, and Elizabeth (Ernie) Lunbeck; grandchildren Matthew, Alyssa, and Elaine; and sisters Patricia Suggs and Sandy Hamer.
In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by his siblings, Darlene Lowe and Robert McCumber.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Monday, September 28, 2026 at Snyder Funeral Homes, Lexington Avenue Chapel 2553 Lexington Ave, Lexington, Ohio 44904 and from 10:00 am to 11:00 am Tuesday, September 29, 2026 with funeral services to follow at 11:00 am with Pastor Andy Rupert officiating. Graveside services will follow at Lexington Cemetery.
