Daniel L. Bowers, Sr., 75, passed away Monday, September 7, 2026, at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital following a short illness. A hardworking man with a strong sense of responsibility, Dan was the kind of person who showed his love through action. He fixed what was broken, built what his family needed, taught what he knew, and stood firmly behind the people he loved. He could be ornery and quick to tease, stubborn at times and honest to a fault—but beneath that tough exterior was a deeply caring and protective man who loved his family without question.
Born November 11, 1950, in Mansfield, Dan was the son of the late Robert L. and Martha (Fry) Bowers. He graduated from Clear Fork High School in 1969 and soon answered the call to serve his country. Dan proudly served in the United States Air Force from December 1969 until July 1971, including service in Vietnam and Thailand. During his time in the Air Force, he worked as an aircraft mechanic, maintaining and working on jets. He was honorably discharged and returned home to begin his career in civilian life.
Dan worked for several area manufacturing companies over the years, including Hi-Lo Trailers, Westinghouse, Mansfield Tire, AMF in Shelby and Flexible. For many years, he served as a shift supervisor at the Mohican Youth Center, where he worked with troubled teens. During this time, he also completed Ohio Police Officers Training and served as an auxiliary officer with the Butler Police Department in the early 1980s.
On February 12, 1972, Dan married Sherral Mowry, beginning a marriage that would span more than five decades. Together they raised three sons, Daniel Jr., William, and Robert. His family was at the center of his life, and Dan took great pride in being a husband, father, grandfather, and protector.
He was an active member of American Legion Post 535 in Bellville, as well as the AMVETS in Bellville and the Tall Timber in Butler organizations. Dan enjoyed the outdoors and spent countless hours fishing at Pleasant Hill Lake, Knox Lake, and Charles Mill Lake, with an occasional trip to Lake Erie. He was an avid hunter, especially enjoying deer and rabbit hunting, and he loved wandering the woods in search of mushrooms.
A man who was never afraid to get his hands dirty, Dan was a talented and resourceful woodworker. He built structural projects as well as furniture and special pieces for his family, including triple bunk beds for his sons and countless shelves and smaller projects. He was also a gifted mechanic who could work on and maintain his own vehicles and was always willing to lend his knowledge and helping hand to others.
In his younger years, Dan volunteered his time coaching baseball for the Valley’s youth. Later, one of his greatest joys was watching his grandchildren play sports. He was known for his humor, his teasing, and his ability to keep everyone on their toes. He could be the family’s “enforcer,” but that title came from a place of love. Dan was fiercely protective of those he cared about and wanted nothing more than to know that his family was safe and doing well.
Though he may not have always been one to put his feelings into words, those who knew Dan best never had to wonder how much he loved them. He showed it in the things he did, the things he built, the problems he solved, the advice he offered, and the people he stood beside. His family will miss his laughter, his teasing, his stubborn determination, and most of all, the steady presence of a man who was always there when they needed him.
He is survived by his wife, Sherral; his three sons, Danny Bowers, Bill and Kristi Bowers, and Rob and Kristi Bowers; grandchildren Colton Bowers, Morgan Bowers, and Brooke Bowers; brothers Robert Squires, and Ty and Julie Bowers, nieces and nephews Kylor and Amber Walker, Jeff and Hunter Bunn, and many other nieces and nephews and extended family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters Carolyn Teeter, Pat Siebert, and Pam and Dale Nitzshe, and a great granddaughter Gracelynn Bowers.
Friends may call Friday, September 11, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Home, Bellville Chapel, where his funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Patrick Bailey will speak. Dan’s family will travel to Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery on Monday, where he will be laid to rest among his fellow fallen heroes at 10:15 am.
