Virgil L. Cates Jr., age 67, of Mansfield passed away Monday evening September 1, 2026 at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital following a brain aneurysm.
Virgil was born May 27, 1959 in Mansfield and graduated from Mansfield High School. For over 20 years he drove as a long haul truck driver. Upon his fathers passing, Virgil managed Cates Auto Wrecking, a well known local business started by his grandfather.
Virgil was outgoing and may have had a stubborn streak. He loved the thrill and freedom of riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle. He was drawn by the thrill of racing, especially drag racing. Virgil enjoyed a variety of music evident by his large collection of over 1000 cd’s!
He is survived by his mother Sophia Goldsmith; uncle Frank Hollon; as well as numerous cousins and close friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Beverly Cates; father Virgil L. Cates Sr. and sister Dr. Cindy Congeni.
Private graveside services will be held in Mansfield Cemetery.
