Dr. William “Bill” Schamadan of Mansfield, OH, passed peacefully on Wednesday, August 26th. Age 96, Bill was born May 28th, 1930, in Cleveland, OH to James and Eva (Schoenbeck) Schamadan.

Bill grew up in Richfield, OH on a farm purchased when the family won the Irish Sweepstakes horse race. Bill learned many of his lifelong skills helping his father build their house, writing and editing his high school newspaper, and spending idyllic summers life guarding with his older brother, Jim, at Hinckley Lake. During his undergraduate pre-med studies at Capitol University, Bill met nursing student Suzanne Gangloff who would later become his wife. Bill and Sue were married on June 26th, 1954, and joyfully celebrated 71 years together. With Sue by his side, Bill graduated Cum Laude from OSU Medical School, completed an internship at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, OH, performed 2 years of military service as a Captain assigned to the Obstetrics service at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX, and returned to Columbus, OH to complete a 4-year OB-GYN residency. In 1963 the couple settled in Mansfield, OH where Bill joined the practice of Dr. George Evans.

Over the next 24 years Bill delivered more than 7,000 babies and helped the OB-GYN practice grow to what is now known as Women’s Care of Mansfield. Bill then moved into an administrative position serving for 10 years as Vice President of Medical Affairs for Mansfield General Hospital. Having also earned a Master’s in Journalism degree during his OB-GYN training, writing was second nature to Bill. Besides authoring 2 books and countless magazine and journal articles, Bill wrote a weekly health and fitness column entitled “Well Being” for the Mansfield News Journal for 26 years.

Giving back to the Community was very important to Bill and he readily shared his expertise and passions supporting various organizations. Recognizing that a large portion of women in the area were not receiving adequate OB-GYN care, in 1965, he and Dr. Bob Ellison began a free women’s clinic that later became Planned Parenthood of Mansfield. Bill also served on or chaired many boards and committees, including Mid Central College of Nursing, Child Services Board, Mental Health and Recovery Services, and he even taught at North Central State College. As a longtime member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Bill was dedicated to enriching the church community by teaching, serving on various committees, singing in the choir and ensuring the building of the columbarium into which he will be interred.

Outside his professional arena, Bill’s interests and talents were varied. He loved spending time and sharing his wisdom with his three daughters and, later, his five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Bill took pride in helping design and lovingly maintain the family home on Courtwright Blvd. Social time was spent enjoying Hermits Club, the Congregational Church Men’s group, playing tennis and being part of the same couples bridge group for decades.

Bill was an avid photographer and woodworker, made award winning wine, and earned the title of Pistol Master while in the Air Force. Bill participated and medaled in several race walking marathons completing his final one on his 75th birthday. Learning to sail Lightning Class boats provided such joy for Bill that he decided to build his own sailboat in his basement! An avid outdoorsman, Bill performed multiple climbs in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, including ascending Mt. Whitney. The walls of Bill’s home were graced with awards and photos honoring his achievements and documenting his travels and favorite places, including many photos of sunsets he had taken during the yearly family visits to Sanibel Island, FL.

Bill is survived by his daughters Barb Renda, Beth (John) Vanvolkinburg, and Amy (Frankie) Smith; grandchildren Emily (Morgan) Marr, Jenny Hartson, Carl Vanvolkinburg, Kyle (Nikki) Hartson, Eric Vanvolkinburg, Maggie Smith and Abby (Kat) Hinsch; great-grandchildren Ari, Charlie, Sterling, Forrest and Isla. Bill was preceded in death by his wife Suzanne Schamadan, brother Dr. James Schamadan and son-in-law John Renda.
