Most people consider the changing seasons of the calendar to be Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. Gregg Ammons measured the seasons around hunting, fishing and sports.
Gregg was born in 1956 to Richard and Wilma Ammons. Alongside his brother and sisters, his passion for the outdoors was infused into his childhood by his grandparents and parents.
Gregg was a 1974 graduate of Lexington High School, where he was a decades long record-holding kicker. Kicking took him to The Ohio State University, where he secured a spot under Woody Hayes with The Buckeyes. He then went on to play semi-professional football with the Shelby Blues in the early 80s. While playing men’s softball, he met the love of his life and married Brenda Smith in 1983. They just celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary this month.
Gregg was a lineman and troubleman for Ohio Edison for 40 years and retired in 2018. Never one to sit still, retirement opened the door to another lifelong passion. He became a charter captain on Lake Erie, sharing his love of fishing with his customers. He was the Captain of the coveted Lip Ripper and Brenda was his first mate.
If there was a season open, chances were he was in the woods or on the water. From walking behind bird dogs in pursuit of quail or pheasants, to listening to beagles work a rabbit through the brush, to chasing whitetails in the fall, calling spring gobblers, and everything in between, Gregg was a true sportsman. Lake Erie was another place he called home, spending countless days on the water fishing for walleye and perch. If he wasn’t hunting or fishing, he was at a sporting event. A lifelong fan of Lexington sports, he could be found on the sidelines or bleachers throughout the years. A proud dad and grandfather, he was always there to cheer them on.
Nothing meant more to Gregg than sharing the outdoors with his family and friends; this will undoubtedly be his greatest legacy and his influence will be felt for generations to come. He was the kind of man who would do anything for the people he loved. Whether someone needed a helping hand, a problem solved, or simply someone they could count on, Gregg was always the first to step up and step in without expecting anything in return.
For nearly eight years, Gregg refused to let cancer define him. He continued living life on his own terms, fighting with grit, determination, and an unwavering will to keep going. He made the most of every day he was given and never stopped being himself.
He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose greatest legacy is the family he loved, the traditions he passed on, and the example he set through a life well lived.
Gregg was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Wilma Ammons, and his son, Jeremy Ammons. He is survived by his loving wife, Brenda Ammons; his daughters, Ashley (Clay) Hudnall, Kelley (Ian) Swope; his grandchildren, Aidan Ammons, Cameron & Peyton Hudnall, and Mason & Logan Swope. His siblings, Rick (Debbie) Ammons, Luana (Mark) Hugel, & Kathy Humphrey as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and a close circle of friends.
His family would like to thank Dr. Merritt from the Ohio State University, James Cancer Center and Dr. Vic with Cleveland Clinic for the care and commitment they provided over the last eight years and helping Gregg fight as long as he did. They would also like to thank his nurses, Stephanie and Brittany with Reserve Hospice Care for their care and compassion.
His family will host a memorial tribute on Saturday, August 15th. Additional service details will be shared with family and friends.
