Dayna Jayne Dent-Sowers, born May 3, 1942, in Mansfield, Ohio, passed away peacefully on the early morning of June 22, 2026 at Kingston Rehab in Ashland, OH, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, community, and lifelong friendships. She was the beloved daughter of Harvey and Lois Dent, both of whom preceded her in death.
Dayna was a graduate of Mansfield Senior High School, Class of 1960, and went on to complete her studies at Mansfield Business School in 1962. Her strong work ethic and warm personality served her well throughout her career. She was employed over the years at Kaufman’s Optical, Reeds, and later the County Recorder’s Office, where she was known for her dedication and friendly nature. In her personal life, Dayna was married twice. She married Robert Gaines on July 14, 1969. He preceded her in death in 1975. She later married Arlie Sowers on July 13, 1985, and they shared many years together until his passing on September 11, 2015.
Dayna was deeply involved in her community. She was one of the founding members of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Local Mansfield Chapter, established in 1962–1963, an organization that reflected her lifelong commitment to friendship, service, and personal growth. She was also actively involved for many years with Miss Ohio, generously opening her home to contestants, serving as a chaperone, organizing donations, and later assisting with food preparation—quietly supporting young women and the program she cared so deeply about. A faithful member of her church, St. Michael Lutheran Church, Mifflin, OH, Dayna found joy in fellowship, service, and faith throughout her life. She loved spending time outdoors and especially enjoyed time at the camper in Mifflin, where she relaxed and made memories with friends. Dayna had a lifelong love of sports, with a special devotion to The Ohio State University Buckeyes. On game days, she was known in her neighborhood for going outside to blow a horn every time the Buckeyes scored a touchdown—sharing her excitement with everyone nearby.
Dayna had a generous heart, especially for children. She welcomed all the neighborhood kids into her backyard and delighted in watching them grow up over the years. She cherished her neighborhood and believed strongly in the value of neighbors looking out for one another. Though she had no immediate family at the time of her passing, Dayna leaves behind a wide circle of dear friends who became her family—friends who shared in her life, her laughter, and her unwavering loyalty. She was also a devoted animal lover and deeply cherished her cats Buckeye and Macey, who preceded her in death, as well as her beloved Mittens, who held a special place in her heart.
Dayna Jayne Dent will be remembered for her warmth, her generosity, her strong community spirit, and the joy she brought to those around her. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
A celebration of life will be held at St. Michael Lutheran Church, 26 East Maine St, (Mifflin) Ashland, OH 4480 on Saturday, July 18th at St. Michael Lutheran, visitation 9:am and service at 11:am; with a meal to follow.
