LEXINGTON — Latrell Hughes and his Lexington teammates enjoyed a dream season in 2025, placing second at the Division I state track meet.

The 2026 campaign has been nightmarish, but Hughes and the Minutemen hope to make amends this weekend.

Hughes will try to defend his state titles in both the 800-meter run and as a member of Lex’s 4×800 relay team at the Division II meet.

The Oregon-bound senior is seeded third in the 800. The quartet of Hughes, Trevor Reed, Nathan Reed and Will Hooper boast the top qualifying time by almost five seconds in the 4×800.

Hughes’ senior season hasn’t gone according to plan. He suffered a nasty injury at the New Balance National Indoor in Boston in mid-March. He was spiked by another competitor and needed six stitches to close the wound.

Despite the injury, Hughes set Lexington’s indoor record in the 800 with a fourth-place finish (1:50.727).

Nagging hamstring injuries have plagued him all spring.

“This whole season has been up and down, but I’ve been training my butt off so that I can compete again for a state title,” Hughes said after winning a regional crown in the 800 on his home track last week. “(Physically) I think I’m close. Mentally, I know I can still do it.”
