William “Bill” Mathew Franta, Jr., age 86, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2026, following a brief illness.
Born July 7, 1939, at his paternal grandparents home on Walker Lake Road in what was then rural Richland County, Bill entered the world sharing not only his name with his father, William Mathew Franta, Sr., but also the very same birthday. He was the son of the late William Mathew Franta, Sr. and Kathleen (Harris) Franta.
A proud graduate of Mansfield Senior High School, Bill’s passion for football was evident from an early age. A dominant offensive and defensive tackle, he earned All-Ohio honors in 1956 and quickly became known for both his strength and athletic ability. Football opened the door for him to attend Wittenberg University on a full scholarship, where he proudly played alongside his brother, Dick. Bill was an exceptionally talented athlete and had opportunities to continue playing beyond college, but education and mentoring young people ultimately became his life’s calling.
At Wittenberg, Bill earned his bachelor’s degree in education before later obtaining his master’s degree from Indiana University Bloomington. He devoted most of his professional career to Crestline High School, where he taught history, social studies, and U.S. government until his retirement in 1995. Beyond the classroom, Coach Franta left a lasting impact on generations of students and athletes, spending many years coaching junior high and high school football as well as track. He loved the game, respected discipline, and believed sports could shape character just as much as competition.
During summers and throughout retirement, Bill stayed busy, alongside his longtime friend, Jim, operating a successful painting business, completing both residential and commercial interior and exterior work. Whether on a ladder or on a football sideline, Bill believed in hard work and doing things the right way.
Sports remained one of his lifelong passions. He enjoyed watching a professional game, but closely followed high school and college football. A large, naturally strong man, Bill also enjoyed lifting weights and staying active, most recently spending time working out with friends at the Ontario Health and Fitness Center.
Outside of sports, Bill loved the outdoors. He especially enjoyed growing his garden, deer hunting and fishing trips shared with his brother, nephew, and friends. His beloved dogs, through the years, were also his steadfast companions and best pals. Though often quiet and reserved, those who knew him best appreciated his dry sense of humor. Around the right crowd with familiar company, Bill’s personality would shine through, revealing a sharp wit and a loyal friend who enjoyed simple moments and genuine conversation.
Bill will be remembered as a gifted athlete, respected teacher and coach, hardworking entrepreneur and a man whose steady presence touched many lives both on and off the field – he very much enjoyed keeping in touch with his former students, athletes and football friends from his high school days.
He is survived by his daughter, Megan Franta, granddaughter, Tiegan Franta, his former wife and friend, Cheryl Franta, brother Richard “Dick” (Leatha) Franta, and nieces and nephew Staci (Steve) Schmenk, Trent (Cindy) Franta, and Whitney Layne, along with extended family and friends.
Friends and family are invited to join in a celebration of Bill’s life Monday June 8th, 2026, at the Ontario United Methodist Church (3540 Park Ave. West Ontario, OH 44906) at noon. Following the service, the family warmly invites you to stay for lunch and memories.
In lieu of flowers, please bring any photos or souvenirs you may have to share at the reception.
