MANSFIELD – Richland Public Health is proud to announce a new partnership with Mansfield YMCA to sponsor free lifeguard certification courses for eligible individuals in Richland County.
This initiative aims to strengthen the local lifeguard workforce, improve water safety, and expand access to essential lifesaving training.
Through this program, any resident of Richland County or individuals working as lifeguards within the county are eligible to receive free certification through the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Program.
This nationally recognized certification provides participants with comprehensive instruction in water rescue skills, CPR/AED for professional rescuers, first aid, and emergency response.
“Ensuring we have enough trained, certified lifeguards in our community is critical to protecting public safety,” said Dr. Julie Chaya, Health Commissioner at Richland Public Health.
“This idea came from recognizing a real need. Pools and aquatic facilities can’t operate safely without qualified lifeguards. By removing the financial barrier to certification, we’re helping more people step into these vital roles.
“We’re excited to partner with the Mansfield YMCA on this opportunity, and it reflects our ongoing commitment to improving the health, well-being, and quality of life for all residents of Richland County.”
The program not only benefits individuals seeking employment or skill development but also supports local aquatic facilities facing staffing shortages.
“This partnership is incredibly important for our community,” said James Twedt, Executive Director of the Mansfield YMCA. “By sponsoring these certifications, Richland Public Health is making it much more accessible for people to become lifeguards.
“That directly strengthens our workforce and enhances safety at our pools. Having well-trained lifeguards isn’t optional, it’s essential. This initiative helps ensure we can continue providing safe, high-quality aquatic programs for everyone.”
The American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification is widely respected and equips participants with the skills and confidence needed to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies. Upon successful completion, participants are certified and ready to work in a variety of aquatic settings.
