Florence J. Thornton, 93, of Johnsville, passed away Thursday, April 23, 2026 at home, with her family gathered close—just as she would have wanted. She was born December 10, 1932, in Bellville, at the family home, to the late Samuel Howard and Dora Ethel (Pollock) Yarger.

Florence built her life around a simple and steady conviction: family comes first. She expressed that love not in grand gestures, but in the quiet, faithful rhythms of care—most often from her kitchen. She was well known for her homemade beef and noodles, a meal that became something of a family tradition. For decades, she opened her home each week, setting her table for children, grandchildren, and whoever else might arrive alongside them. “There is no sincerer love than the love of food,” George Bernard Shaw once wrote, and Florence seemed to understand that truth instinctively. In her home, no one was a stranger for long; friends were folded easily into the family and treated as her own.

She had a playful spirit as well. Whether it was a competitive game of aggravation—where she was known to come out on top—or her regular card games with friends at the Lexington Senior Center, Florence delighted in time spent together. In later years, she found enjoyment in trips to the casino, trying her luck at the slot machines. Still, her greatest joy remained close to home: cheering from the sidelines at her grandchildren’s games and staying actively involved in the lives unfolding around her.
Florence worked faithfully for many years at Essex Wire in Lexington, retiring after a long and dedicated career. Yet even there, it was the relationships she formed and the people she cared for that defined her time.

She will be fondly remembered by her children, Jeffery (Joyce) Thornton of Mansfield, Lori Brewer of Johnsville, Shelley (William) Gall of Crestline, and Peggy (Stephen) Wilcox of Lakeview; her sister, Francis Pryor of Johnsville; her daughter-in-law, Joanie Dickerson of Johnsville and a growing legacy of eleven grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of almost 50 years, Donald J. Thornton; her son, Donald Ray Thornton; her daughter-in-law, Bobbie Jeanne Thornton; her son-in-law, Rollin Brewer; and her sisters, Sadie Hiser, Annabel Heston, Nellie Pollock, Galina McDowell, Wanda Ruhl, and Lucinda Johnson.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Todd & Lynn Corwin and Chuck & Sue Bloom for all of their love and support over the years!
