Dr. Semur P. Rajan, beloved father, brother, uncle, and physician, 88, of Mansfield, OH died Thursday April 16th at Ohio Health Mansfield Hospital. He was the oldest son of three and born in Semur, Tamil Nadu, India on February 15, 1938 to Perumal and Pavaye Gounder. He graduated from Stanley Medical College in Chennai India in 1962 and traveled to the United States in 1963 to pursue training in general surgery. After training at Lutheran Medical in Cleveland, he came to Mansfield, Ohio in 1970, with his wife, young son, and daughter to join a surgical practice. He fell in love with the community in Mansfield and dedicated his career to the area.
He was a member of the American College of Surgeons and the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons and an involved participant in the medical community. As a founding member of the Tamil Nadu Foundation, he led efforts to unite expatriates in charity and cultural activities.
An avid golfer, he was an active member of Westbrook Country Club. In addition, he pursued tennis, racquetball, skiing, and running. Socially, he was active in the Bharathi Kala Manram Cultural society which hosted South Indian cultural events. He was a consummate host of large gatherings, all-night playing card fests, and made a chicken briyani that was famous amongst his golf group. Thanksgiving was his favorite holiday during which he welcomed extended family for a multi-day celebration.
Always grateful to those who have helped and taught him throughout his remarkable journey, he most recently set up an endowment for students at his high school in India, Sengunthur Secondary School of Erode.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved brothers, Sathi and Srinivasan.
He is survived by his two children, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, four grandchildren, and 3 nephews and a niece: His daughter, Dr. Sabitha Rajan (Sabapathy), son-in-law Selvam Sabapathy, and grandchildren Devan and Dharma of Austin, TX. His son, Dr. Sivaram Rajan, daughter-in-law Dr. Ami Vaidya, and grandchildren Uma and Nisha of Haworth, NJ. Nephews Sivaprakash Srinivasan in Erode, India, Dinesh Srinivasan of Seattle, WA, Ram Sathi in Baltimore MD, and niece Harini Sathi of Philadelphia, PA.
