MANSFIELD — The Mansfield Shakespeare Company is inviting community members to take their first step into the world of Shakespeare or enhance their current skills with a special acting workshop designed to help performers prepare for diction and voice projection in an outdoor performance environment.

This free workshop will place a special emphasis on the script of Hamlet as a precursor to auditions for this summer’s production.

It is intended to benefit all performers — whether they have never worked with Shakespeare’s language or have experience performing in his plays.

Understanding The Bard

Through guided exercises and discussion, attendees will explore how to understand Shakespeare’s language, interpret verse, and bring characters to life in an outdoor environment.

Participants will gain an introduction to techniques actors use when preparing Shakespearean roles, including understanding the structure of the verse, breaking down complex passages, and applying modern acting approaches to classical text.

Learning the craft of acting in a Shakespearean play

  • WHEN: Saturday, April 18 from noon to 3 p.m. Light refreshments included.
  • WHERE: Ohio State University Mansfield – Founders Auditorium in Ovalwood Hall.
  • WHAT TO EXPECT: The workshop will provide a welcoming and supportive environment where participants can learn practical tools for approaching Shakespeare’s text with confidence.

The workshop will also offer helpful insights into the audition process for Hamlet, giving participants the chance to ask questions and build confidence before stepping into the audition room.

This event is designed for performers of all experience levels, with a special emphasis on newcomers who may be curious about Shakespeare but unsure where to begin.

Whether someone has years of acting experience or is simply interested in trying something new, the workshop aims to demystify Shakespeare and make the material approachable and fun.

The Mansfield Shakespeare Company encourages anyone considering auditioning for Hamlet to attend, but participation in the workshop is not required in order to audition.
