LEXINGTON — Olivia Thomas worked overtime Saturday.
A Lexington freshman, Thomas was a triple-winner at the Ray Mitchell Lexington Invitational, helping Lady Lex to a runner-up finish in the 16-team event.
Thomas won the 300 hurdles and ran the lead-off leg on Lady Lex’s winning 4×200 and 4×400 relay teams.
The win in the 4×400 — the final event of the day — secured the second-place finish behind Upper Arlington (94.5 points). Lexington finished with 86 points, while Avon had 81.
“We just wanted to come in and do our best,” Thomas said. “I’m very happy with all the work that me and my team put in to get to here.”
Thomas won the 300 hurdles in 48.29 seconds. She teamed with Tatum Stover, Sylvia Secrist and Allison Laury to win the 4×200 in 1:46.08. Mia Twedt joined Thomas, Secrist and Laury in the 4×400 (4:00.31).
Richland County swept the relays as the Ontario quartet of Jazlyn Johnson, Emma Kaple, Alayna Foltz and Sasha Bulakovski won the 4×100 in 51.49.
Ashland boasted the area’s other two individual winners. Sadie Walter won the 100 hurdles in 15.49 and Oaklynn Burns won the long jump with a leap of 17-3.
In addition to winning the 100 hurdles, Walter was second in the 100-meter dash. The events are back-to-back and contested minutes apart.
“I did it a little bit last year and I think I’m going to keep doing it this year,” Walter said. “I really like the adrenaline that stays with me going into the 100 (dash). It’s a good warm-up for me.”
A junior, Burns hasn’t long jumped since the seventh grade.
“I got bored of just doing running events,” Burns said of her return to the long jump. “I thought, ‘Why not try something new?’ ”
Boys
Lexington’s Latrell Hughes was the area’s only double-winner. The Oregon-bound Hughes set a meet record in the 400 (48.06) and anchored the winning 4×200 relay (1:29.56). Hughes teamed with Camron Glennon, Cohen Lautzenhiser and Eben Cochran.
“It feels good to be outdoors,” said Hughes, who ran indoor track for the first time this year. “I’m not a big fan of indoor. It’s nice to be out here.”
Clear Fork’s Julian Mills won the shot put (54-6) and Davis Hoeflich won the high jump (6-6).
Hoeflich battled injuries all of last year.
“I tore two (ankle) ligaments during basketball,” Hoeflich said. “Last year I was never at full strength. It always hurt. My ankle couldn’t take the pressure last year.
“This is really encouraging.”
Lexington repeated as the team champ with 104 points. Avon (80.5) was second and Upper Arlington (63.33) was third.
