SHELBY — Tiny tuxedos, twirling dresses and glow sticks lit up the room as Shelby’s youngest students danced the night away at a prom made just for them.

Shelby Little Whippets Preschool welcomed students and their families for a preschool prom Thursday evening packed with music, games and plenty of kid-approved fun.

“It is always a fun and special evening for our preschool families,” said Kaylin Slone, a teacher’s assistant in her fifth year at Shelby.

Upon arrival families were announced by name and walked along a red carpet to have their photo taken. The space filled quickly and energy bounced from the dance floor to the game tables as children laughed and played.

Families turn out for a night to remember

Slone said the preschool has hosted family involvement events before, but turnout wasn’t always the best.

They often scheduled gatherings during the busy Christmas season, and families weren’t able to attend.

This year staff switched things up and created something new — a preschool prom.

“This is the best turnout we’ve ever had,” Slone said.

She said watching the event come together was her favorite part of the night, as excitement built in the days leading up to the prom.

“The kids have been counting down the days, telling us the songs they want to hear and showing us their dance moves,” she said.

All four classes, both morning and afternoon, joined the celebration, bringing together more than 100 children.

The room offered something for everyone, from a lively dance floor to a game area and snack stations.

Kids grabbed treats from a popcorn bar, posed for photos and picked out glowing accessories at the glow stick station.

Slone said many people don’t realize the preschool operates within the school, and she hopes events like this help spread the word and bring in more families.
