Eugene “Gene” Russell Simmons, age 92, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 3, 2026 surrounded by the love of his family. Gene was born on October 12, 1933 in Mansfield to the late Russell T. & Dorothy Vanzile Simmons.

Gene was a 25 year associate of Mansfield Tire. He was a dedicated member of their team and stayed until the business closed. After the tire shop closed, Gene decided to use his talents as a builder and started Built Right Construction, doing home additions and garages for twenty years until his retirement. Gene never really retired, he found joy in staying busy around his house and property. Keeping his hands busy and helping others were of utmost importance to him. He was a man of integrity, very kind and believed in finding good in everyone he met.

When Gene did slow down a bit, he enjoyed traveling and water skiing. Equally as important as his work ethic was his faith. Gene was a member of the Perry First Church of Christ.

His life and legacy will live on through his companion and caregiver of 31 years, Nora Goodrich; his son, Larry Simmons; his sisters, Marilyn King and Darlene Elliott; his grandchildren, Scott Simmons, Steve Simmons, Sam Simmons, Allison Holt and Catrina Brown; his great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Chloe, Olivia, Samson, Cora and Riah. He also leaves behind several friends, including his one time business partner, Charlie Daniels and several extended family members.
