Dennis E. Houggy, age 84, of Mansfield, passed away peacefully Wednesday morning, February 25, 2026, at Trustwell Living in Mansfield, surrounded by his loving family.

Born December 3, 1941, in Pittsburgh, Dennis was the son of David W. Houggy and Esther R. (Prager) Houggy. He graduated from Aspinwall High School and went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry from Ohio Northern University. On December 20, 1963, he married the love of his life, Jean Martin whom he met at Ohio Northern University. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, adventure, and laughter — sharing more than 62 wonderful years of marriage.

While residing in Dorseyville, Pennsylvania, Dennis volunteered as a paramedic and served as fire chief, always ready to lend a hand when his community called. With an entrepreneurial spirit Dennis became the owner of Florida Flexibles, Inc. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Mansfield, where his faith quietly guided his life.

Dennis never sat still for long. He was always immersed in a home improvement project, with tools in hand and a vision in mind. His projects were many — and often ongoing — including his beloved antique 1930’s Ford sedan and his trusty stake-side Chevy pickup, which he considered a “permanent work in progress.”

An outdoorsman at heart, Dennis found joy in hiking, wildlife, and feeding the birds that gathered near his home. Some of the family’s most cherished memories were made at “the camp,” their weekend retreat filled with laughter, nature, and togetherness. Dennis’ love of nature extended to his annual garden which he planted and tended to each year. He and Jean shared a love of worldwide travel, boating, and scuba diving, embracing every adventure side by side.

Such gracious hosts, Dennis and Jean jumped at the opportunity to host Markus Kinstler, a German foreign exchange student. A lifelong friendship was cultivated with Markus and his family. Dennis and Jean were thrilled with the opportunity to visit Markus in his home country.

He had a playful spirit and a legendary sense of humor. Playfully nicknamed “Dennis the Menace,” he was always on the lookout for the perfect moment to- deliver a well-timed practical joke. He had played the tuba, rode a unicycle, and even crafted his own stilts to walk tall above the crowd. Joy was found in making others laugh.

He also shared a special bond with his rescue cat-CB. The Houggy family always said,”CB was the one who rescued Dennis and Jean with his love”. Then there were his black Labradors Duke, Max and Brutus who were and are never far from his side.

Dennis will be remembered for his steady hands, curious mind, generous heart, and the laughter he brought into every room.

Above all, Dennis was devoted to his family. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Jean Houggy of Mansfield; daughter, Denean Merritts (Duke Kornsuwan) of Mansfield, son, Keith (Karen) Houggy of Connecticut; his grandchildren who affectionately called him “Grandpa Cuckoo”- Brian, Brandon, Taylor, and Nathan; siblings Dave (Helen) Houggy of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Joyce Jones of Florida, and Keith Houggy of Colorado; as well as a large group of lifelong friends.

A memorial gathering will be held Sunday, March 1, 2026 from 3-6 pm in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home.
