Howard Michael Gordon, age 79, of Shelby, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 20, 2026, at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital with his wife at his side.
Howard was born November 19, 1946, in Mount Vernon, Ohio, to the late Ellis N. and Zenia E. (Barrett) Gordon. He was a 1964 graduate of Cardington Lincoln High School. Howard was known throughout his life as a hard worker, a trait that defined him in everything he did. As a farmer in the Cardington area, he dedicated himself to the land and the agricultural community he loved. In addition to farming, he “always worked away,” holding various jobs over the years, spending much of his time at Galion Iron Works. In 1968, Howard answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He served honorably in Special Communications until 1970.
Howard was deeply invested in his community. He served as a 4-H advisor, mentoring young people and sharing his knowledge of agriculture. He also served on the Cardington School Board, contributing his time and leadership to support local education. Even when he wasn’t working, Howard was still “working.” Whether traveling to visit family or spending time with loved ones, he was always ready to lend a hand, fixing, building, or helping in any way he could around their homes. An avid fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes, one of Howard’s fondest memories was attending the 1974 Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, where he watched his Buckeyes claim victory. Determined to be there, he purchased two tickets with his own money – funds raised by selling a steer for $800.
Howard is survived by his wife of nearly 37 years, Cindy (Ingram) Gordon; their children: Andy Gordon of San Antonio, Tx, Chad (Shannon) Gordon of Nashville, TN, and Jenni (Phil) Ticer of Cuyahoga Falls, OH; grandchildren: Jake Ticer, Maddie (Kyle) Morrison, Nick Gordon, and Ben Gordon; great-grandchildren: Mae and Walker; sister: Inez Crowe of Lexington; numerous nieces – some who were his “favorite”, nephews, other relatives, friends and his beloved cat: Kimme.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers: Richard Gordon, Leonard Gordon, and Terry Gordon; and sisters: Betty Gordon and Janet Engberg.
A gathering to celebrate Howard’s life will be announced at a later date. Care for Howard and his family is being provided by the Penwell Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby.
